KOM Strategy for Flat Segments
Flat segments are the most predictable KOM targets: almost everything is aerodynamics, and aerodynamics can be planned.
Segment selection
Look for straight stretches of one to four kilometres with no junctions, traffic lights or sharp corners. The straighter it is, the more tailwind helps and the more repeatable your time becomes.
Also check the leaderboard history: if the top times all come from one wind direction, you know which day you need.
Setup
Take the most aerodynamic bike you own, fast tyres, close-fitting kit and no bags. On a three-minute segment several small changes add up to double-digit seconds.
Approach and pacing
Enter the segment as fast as you legally can — a flying start is the single biggest lever on flat segments. Then ride hard and steady rather than in surges: at constant speed, drag is lowest for the same average speed.
Repetition is part of the plan
Expect two or three attempts per season on a suitable day. A single attempt in perfect conditions is rarely the best one — execution needs practice on the specific stretch.
In short
Flat means predictable: wind, setup and entry speed decide — in that order.
Frequently asked questions
What is the ideal flat segment length?
Two to four minutes of riding time suits most riders' power curve and exploits wind particularly well.
Do multiple attempts in one day make sense?
The second attempt is often the fastest, the third rarely. Allow twenty minutes of recovery between attempts.
