Gravel Bike or Road Bike: Which Is Faster on Your Segment?
On tarmac the road bike almost always wins; on loose gravel the gravel bike does. The interesting question is the ground in between.
The two effects
The gravel bike loses aerodynamically (higher CdA, wider tyres, more upright position) and in rolling resistance on smooth ground. It wins as soon as the surface gets rough: better traction, fewer vibration losses, a calmer line.
Time differences in practice
On a flat two-kilometre segment, typical magnitudes are:
- smooth tarmac: road bike 15 to 25 seconds faster
- rough tarmac: road bike 8 to 15 seconds faster
- firm farm track: roughly equal
- loose gravel: gravel bike 10 to 30 seconds faster
Wind shifts the boundary
Strong tailwind raises speeds, which increases the weight of aerodynamics — the road bike gets relatively better. In headwind at low speed the gravel bike's penalty shrinks.
Predictions need the real bike
Enter the bike you will actually ride in your profile. An over-optimistic CdA produces predictions you can never hit — and makes the PR probability worthless.
