Lighter or slipperier? The answer depends almost entirely on gradient, and therefore on your speed.
The boundary sits near five percent
Below roughly five percent gradient you ride fast enough that drag eats most of your power — aerodynamics wins here. Above it, speed drops far enough that gravity dominates and weight counts.

For a rider at 80 kg system weight on a three-minute segment:
- flat: 0.03 m² less CdA is worth 8 to 12 seconds
- flat: 1 kg less is worth under 1 second
- 8 percent gradient: 1 kg less is worth 2 to 3 seconds
- 8 percent gradient: 0.03 m² less CdA is worth 1 to 2 seconds
What that means for purchases
If your target segments are flat or rolling, every euro spent on aerodynamics — position, kit, wheels, tyres — beats lightweight parts by a wide margin. Only steep climbs of several minutes flip the picture.
The cheapest kilo is still leaving luggage, tools and the second bottle at home on attempt day.
