When Is KOM Season? The Best Window in the Year

Best times do not arrive evenly across the year. Knowing the seasonal pattern lets you build form to match the weather window.

Wind through the year

In Central Europe wind is strongest in autumn and winter and weakest in early summer. So for wind-dependent flat segments, March to April and October to November offer the best tailwind chances.

The conflict

In winter the air is dense and cold, clothing is bulky and form is often modest. In summer the air is thin and form is good, but the wind is weak. For many riders the best overall package sits in April, May and September: enough wind, mild temperatures, usable form.

  • March/April: strong wind, building form — good for flat segments
  • May/June: good form, less wind — good for climbs
  • July/August: thin air, but heat limits power
  • September/October: warm air plus rising wind — often the optimum

Planning

Deliberately place your form peak in a window with a high probability of wind, and keep two to three weeks flexible. A KOM attempt requires being available on a day that only becomes clear at short notice.

In short

Build form towards the windy months and keep spontaneous days free during them.

Frequently asked questions

Is chasing a storm system worth it?

On straight, sheltered flat segments, yes. With gusts above 60 km/h the risk is too high athletically and safety-wise.

Are climbing segments weather-independent?

Not entirely — temperature and cooling matter a lot. Cool mornings are often fastest uphill.
